Some objects earn their place on a wall by being useful. Others earn it by being beautiful. The Stendig Calendar manages both without appearing to try. Designed in 1966 by Massimo Vignelli, one of the most influential graphic designers of the twentieth century, it sits in the permanent collection of MoMA, New York, and is reprinted every year. It is not a calendar that blends into a room. At 122cm wide and 92cm high, it is the room. You can read more about the story behind the Stendig Calendar on our journal.

Each monthly page alternates between black-on-white and white-on-black, set in Neue Haas Grotesk (the typeface that became Helvetica) on Vignelli's signature grid. There is no colour, no illustration and no decoration beyond the numbers themselves. That restraint is what makes it so striking. Browse our planners and journals collection for more considered ways to organise the year.

The Stendig works as a family planner, a studio calendar, a functional focal point in a hallway or kitchen, or simply as a piece of graphic design that happens to tell you what day it is. When each month is done, the perforated page tears away cleanly and makes excellent gift wrap, craft paper or pinboard material. Three metal eyelets along the top edge make hanging straightforward.

It is one of our best-selling pieces year after year, and each annual edition arrives in limited numbers. For more design-led ideas, explore our gift ideas for the minimalist.

Frequently Asked Questions

How large is the Stendig Calendar? It measures 122cm wide by 92cm high. It is a truly oversized piece, so plan your wall space before ordering.

Why does a separate freight charge apply? Due to its size, the Stendig cannot be sent by standard courier. A separate oversized freight charge is invoiced before dispatch: North Island $10 non-rural / $14 rural; South Island $15 non-rural / $19 rural.

What is the design history of the Stendig Calendar? It was designed in 1966 by Massimo Vignelli, the Italian-American graphic designer also known for the New York City subway map and the American Airlines identity. The calendar is held in the permanent collection of MoMA, New York, and has been reprinted annually.

Can the pages be reused? Yes. Each month is perforated for a clean tear. The pages are printed on 90gsm uncoated paper and work well as gift wrap, craft paper or collage material.

How is it hung? The calendar has three metal eyelets along the top edge for hanging on hooks or nails.

Styling Tips

The scale of the Stendig is the point. Give it a wall where it can be seen properly: above a desk or work table, in a hallway with nothing competing on either side, or as the anchor of a minimal living room feature wall. It reads best against white or very light walls, where the black and white pages can switch month to month without clashing with anything behind them.

Pair it with natural timber furniture, matte black hardware and a few considered objects on a shelf below. A Karlsson clock, a small ceramic vase and a single faux stem alongside the Stendig create a complete monochrome vignette. In a studio or home office, hang it within sightline of your desk and let the scale make the space feel intentional rather than improvised.

Gifting Tips

For the design lover, the architect or the person who already owns everything, the Stendig is a gift with real provenance. It suits a new home, a new studio or a new year, and the torn pages can wrap the next present in bold graphic numerals.
