An entry is a small problem with a large effect. It is the first thing anyone sees and the place where the day's belongings land, and the difference between one that works and one that does not usually comes down to whether there is a home for keys within arm's reach of the door.

Three things solve most of it. Somewhere to hang a coat and a bag, somewhere small and shallow for keys, cards and sunglasses, and a mirror, which does the practical job on the way out and makes a narrow hallway feel wider on the way in. Add a tray for shoes or an umbrella stand only if the space genuinely has them.

What does a small entry actually need?
Hooks, a shallow catchall for keys and a mirror. Anything with a footprint, like a bench or an umbrella stand, is only worth it if the hallway is wide enough to walk past it with a bag.

Where should a hallway mirror go?
Opposite or beside a light source rather than facing the front door, so it bounces daylight down the hall. Hang it at eye height for the people using it, not centred on the wall.

Do the hooks and racks need drilling?
Most wall hooks do, and the fixing type is listed on the product page. Freestanding racks and stands need nothing, which makes them the better choice in a rental.

How do I stop the entry becoming a dumping ground?
Give each thing that gets dropped a place that is easier to use than the floor. Most entries fail because the keys have nowhere to go, not because there is not enough storage.
