French Country

Ceramics and jugs, vases, candle holders, textiles and rustic pieces in cream, stone, sage and dusty blue, where worn timber and a small chip count as character. Put flowers in a jug instead of a vase, and let the room look collected, not bought.

French Country is the scheme that forgives you. Nothing needs to match, the timber is better when it is worn, and a chip in the ceramic counts as provenance rather than damage. It is the opposite of a showroom, which is precisely why it feels like a home.

The palette comes off a farmhouse table: cream, stone, soft sage, dusty blue, warm white. Materials are honest and a little rough. Linen that creases, ceramic that is not quite even, iron and aged brass, timber with a history. Add flowers, real or otherwise, in a jug rather than a vase.

Our French Country range covers ceramics and jugs, vases, candle holders, textiles, wall art and rustic decorative pieces. Layer it slowly and let it look collected rather than bought.

What colours work in a French Country room?
Cream, stone, soft sage, dusty blue and warm white, taken straight off a farmhouse table. Add warmth with worn timber and aged brass, and save bold colour for flowers rather than walls or upholstery.

Which faux flowers suit French Country?
Loose, garden-style stems work best: hydrangeas, cabbage roses, Queen Anne's lace and eucalyptus. Put them in a jug rather than a formal vase, and let a few stems lean so the arrangement looks freshly picked.

Can I mix French Country with modern furniture?
Yes. Keep a modern sofa or table in a neutral fabric, then layer French Country through the smaller things: a linen tea towel, an enamel bowl, a jug of stems. The contrast stops it looking like a period set.

How do I make new pieces look collected?
Buy slowly and mix finishes: one enamel piece, one ceramic, one timber board. Avoid matching sets, repeat a single colour like sage across the room, and let a few things show wear rather than replacing them.
