Towels are the cheapest way to change how a bathroom feels and the easiest thing to get wrong. Too many colours and the room looks like a laundry pile. One tone, folded properly, and even a small bathroom reads like it was thought about.

Buy fewer and better. Two bath towels per person in rotation, a hand towel that gets changed often, a face cloth that is not an afterthought. Turkish cotton dries faster and folds flatter, which matters more than it sounds in a bathroom with one rail.

What is a Turkish towel?
A flat-woven cotton towel, sometimes called a peshtemal. It is lighter than a terry towel, dries much faster, folds down small enough for a beach bag, and softens with every wash.

How many towels do I actually need?
Two bath towels per person so one can be in the wash, plus a hand towel and a face cloth per bathroom. Anything beyond that lives in the cupboard and takes up the space you wanted for something else.

How do I stop towels going stiff?
Use less detergent than the bottle suggests, skip the fabric softener, which coats the fibres and stops them absorbing, and dry them properly rather than leaving them damp in a heap.

What colour towels should I buy?
Pick one tone and stay with it. Matching towels make a bathroom look deliberate, and when one wears out you can replace it without the set looking odd.
