Most home offices are a corner of another room, which is exactly why they need more thought rather than less. If the desk is visible from the couch, it is part of the living room whether you like it or not, and a room full of cables is a room you will avoid.

Work out what lives on the surface and give everything else a lid. A notebook you want to open, a pen worth keeping, one object with no function at all so the desk does not read as a workstation. Good light matters more than good furniture. So does having somewhere for the paper to go at five o'clock.
