Work out what lives on the surface and give everything else a lid. A notebook you want to open, a pen worth keeping, one object with no function at all so the desk does not read as a workstation. Good light matters more than good furniture. So does having somewhere for the paper to go at five o'clock.

How do I set up a home office in a small space?

Where should a desk lamp go?

How do I make a desk look less like a workstation?
Add one object with no job at all, such as a vase, sculpture or framed print. Hide cables, keep paper in a tray or file holder, and choose accessories in one material, like marble or terrazzo.
