The best baby gifts are the ones still around when the child turns five. Clothes are outgrown before the thank you card arrives, but a good soft toy gets named, dragged about and kept.
Most of our range comes from Lily & George, a New Zealand designed label: sloths, bunnies, bears, a kiwi, a mammoth, knitted rattles and the Miss Deer wooden teether with its crocheted face. Alongside them sit the Miffy Eco Tiny Teddy by Bon Ton Toys, a knitted monkey rattle from Living Textiles and a Daisies swaddle from Emma Kate Co.
For a newborn, a rattle or teether is sized for small hands, while a 30cm soft toy will sit on the nursery shelf until it is needed. Pair a toy with a swaddle for a gift with one thing to use now and one to keep. For the rest of the room, browse our nursery collection.
What is a good first toy for a newborn?
A rattle or teether sized for small hands is a practical start. The Lily & George rattles are around 17 to 20cm, and the Miss Deer teether pairs a crocheted cotton face with a wooden ring. Check each product page for age guidance.
What makes a good baby shower gift?
A rattle or teether paired with a swaddle is hard to go wrong with: one thing for now, one for later. If you know the nursery colours, choose a soft toy in a matching tone so it earns a spot on the shelf.
How big are the soft toys?
Sizes are on each product page. Nori the Turtle, Sofia the Sloth and Monty the Mammoth are around 30cm, the Flopsy Bear is 35cm and the Madeleine doll is 40cm, all big enough to sit on a nursery shelf until the baby is ready.
Do you deliver baby gifts NZ wide?
Yes, we deliver NZ wide from our Mount Maunganui store, so you can send a gift straight to the new parents by entering their address at checkout. Items marked online only are brought in to order, so allow up to 10 working days.
