Cushions are the cheapest way to change a room and the easiest to overdo. The line between layered and landfill is thinner than anyone admits, and it usually comes down to how many you have to move before you can sit down.

Odd numbers work. Vary the size, but keep the palette narrow and let texture carry the difference: a linen against a bouclé against a fine weave, all in the same three tones. Inserts matter more than covers, so go one size up on the insert if you want the chop and the fullness rather than a sad flat square. Three on a two-seater, five on a three-seater, and stop.

What size cushion inner should I buy?
Go one size up from the cover, so a 50cm cover takes a 55cm inner. The extra fill pushes into the corners and gives you a full cushion that holds a chop. Our duck feather inners come in four sizes.

Are feather or polyester cushion inners better?
Feather inners are softer, hold their shape when you chop them and look fuller for longer, but they need a daily plump. Polyester inners are lighter and spring back on their own, though they flatten sooner and never sit quite as relaxed.

How do I wash cushion covers?
Take the inner out, zip the cover closed and turn it inside out, then wash cool on a delicate cycle. Line dry in the shade and put it back on while very slightly damp so it smooths out over the inner.
