Vases

A vase is the most useful object in a house because it is the one that changes. Same shelf, same vase, different stems, and the room reads as new. It is also perfectly good empty, which is more than can be said for most decor.

Shape does the work. A narrow neck holds a single stem upright and makes one flower look deliberate rather than sad. A wide mouth wants a generous armful or nothing. Bud vases are best in threes at different heights. If you are buying one vase, buy the sculptural one that looks good with nothing in it, because that is how it will spend most of its life.
