Decor is the last ten percent that makes a room look like someone lives there on purpose. The furniture is the sentence; this is the punctuation. It is also where most people either stop too early or keep going for too long.

The useful rules are few. Odd numbers over even. Three heights on any surface. Repeat a material or a tone at least twice across a room so the eye connects them. Leave a third of every surface empty, because the gap is what makes the rest look chosen rather than accumulated. Then stop.

How do I style a shelf without it looking cluttered?
Group objects in odd numbers at three different heights, repeat a material or tone at least twice, and leave about a third of each shelf empty. Mix books laid flat and upright, and add one living element such as a faux stem.

What is the difference between a vase and a vessel?
A vase is made to hold stems, while a vessel is any decorative container, from a bowl to an urn, that may stay empty. Many of ours do both, so a sculptural vase can sit bare on a shelf and still look finished.

How do I choose decor for a small room?
Go for fewer, larger pieces rather than lots of small ones, which read as clutter. A single statement vase, a mirror to bounce light around and one tray to corral small things will do more than a dozen trinkets.

How do I mix metals and materials in a room?
Pick one main metal, such as brass, and use a second one sparingly. Balance hard materials like glass, stone and ceramic with softer ones like timber, linen and faux greenery so the room feels layered rather than cold.
