Potted Faux Plants

Start with scale. Small pots, 20cm to 40cm, suit desks, bedside tables and shelves, where a single succulent or fern is enough. Mid-size plants around 50cm to 90cm hold their own on a kitchen bench, a console or a side table. Anything over a metre is a floor plant: a Kentia palm, olive tree or fiddle leaf fig in a corner does the work of a piece of furniture, and it is usually the one plant a room is missing.

To make a faux plant read as real, treat it the way you would a live one. Turn the pot so the fullest side faces the room, bend and separate the wired stems so no two leaves sit at the same angle, and drop the nursery pot into a heavier vessel from Planters & Pots so the base looks grounded. A little moss or a few pebbles over the top hides the join.

Can I put it in a different pot?
Yes. Most come in a plain plastic or lightweight pot that is meant to be dropped into a cover pot. Measure the base and choose a planter it sits into snugly; anything with a 2cm to 3cm gap can be packed with moss or pebbles.

What size do I need?
Measure the spot first, height and width, and allow for the leaves spreading wider than the pot. Each product lists its overall height, and the larger trees are best judged against a doorway or a chair for a sense of scale.

Do the trees cost more to ship?
Some of the floor-standing trees are oversized items. Where that applies the product page says so and asks you to get in touch before ordering so we can quote freight for your address.

Do they need any care?
A dust with a soft cloth or a gentle rinse now and then is all. Keep them out of harsh all-day sun, which will slowly fade the colour, and they will look the same in five years as they do today.
