Some stems do the heavy lifting in an arrangement. This one does the opposite, and an arrangement is usually the better for it. Queen Anne's lace scatters fine, lacy clusters of tiny flowers across an open, feathery frame, and in light green it reads as fresh field picking rather than anything formal.

The stem measures 49cm, which is the useful middle height: tall enough to give a bouquet air above the rim of a vase, short enough to trim down for a bud vase without losing the shape. It is also known as wild carrot, bishop's lace and, in its close garden relative, bishop's flower or false Queen Anne's lace, so if you have been searching under any of those, this is the bloom you had in mind.

Where it earns its place is in the gaps. Peonies, hydrangeas and roses give you mass; this gives you the lightness between them, which is the difference between a bunch that looks arranged and one that looks gathered. Browse the rest of the faux flowers range to build the bunch around it.

Common questions

How many stems do I need?
As a filler, three to five through a mixed bouquet is plenty. On its own, seven to nine in a wide mouthed vessel gives you that loose meadow look without needing anything else. Our vase collection has the shapes that suit it best.

Can it be trimmed?
Yes. The stem can be cut to height with wire cutters or sturdy scissors. Cut from the bottom, and take a little less than you think you need to start with.

How do I keep it looking right?
Dust the heads every few weeks with a soft brush or a hairdryer on its coolest setting, and keep it out of harsh direct sun so the colour holds. Our guide to making artificial flowers look real covers the unpacking and shaping that makes the biggest difference.

Styling it

  • Add three to five stems to a clear or ceramic vase for a simple, relaxed bunch
  • Mix with creamy faux blooms and dried sprays for a softer layered look
  • Pair with rattan, timber or whitewashed surfaces for a natural palette
  • Use a single stem in a bud vase as a light, sculptural moment on a windowsill
  • Work it through a tablescape or a bridal bouquet where you want air rather than mass
