Black and white is the easiest scheme to get right and the hardest to make interesting. Done badly it reads as a showroom. Done well, it has depth, and the difference is almost always texture.

A monochrome room needs the matte against the gloss, the chunky knit against the smooth ceramic, the rough timber against the polished metal. Once the colour argument is settled, everything else in the space has to work harder, which is exactly why the good pieces look so good against it.

Our monochrome range covers clocks, vases, wall art and prints, cushions and throws, lighting, storage and objects, all in black, white and the greys between. Reliable in a rental, a new build or a room that has stopped making sense.

How do I stop a black and white room feeling cold?
Bring in warmth through texture and natural materials. Add timber, linen, a woven basket or a knitted throw, choose a warm white rather than a stark one, and use lamps with fabric shades to soften the light at night.

Should I choose black or white frames for monochrome prints?
Black frames sharpen the contrast and suit graphic prints. White frames recede and feel lighter on a pale wall. On a gallery wall, pick one colour and stick to it so the art is what catches the eye.

Which monochrome pieces are easiest to start with?
Pieces that do a job. A Karlsson Vintage wall clock in black, grey or white, an Umbra HUB round mirror, or a Zakkia terrazzo tray all anchor a monochrome scheme and are easy to move from room to room.

Can I mix black metal with other finishes?
Yes. Matte black pairs well with warm timber and a small amount of brass or gold, which stops the scheme looking flat. Keep the accent metal to two or three pieces per room so black stays the lead.
