Mick Fanning’s Gold Coast Home | Three Birds Renovations + Ecoya

Some house tours are pure fantasy. This one is surprisingly useful. The Gold Coast home of world surfing champion Mick Fanning and his partner Bree was brought to life by Three Birds Renovations, and it has a lot in common with the homes we see around Mount Maunganui: strong coastal light, sand at the door, an easy pull between inside and out. Inside the house

A calm first impression

The house opens with natural light, soft textures and very little clutter. Look at the sitting nook above: two bouclé armchairs, a woven rattan pedestal, one abstract artwork and an Ecoya candle on a white side table. Five things, and the corner is finished. It is a good reminder that a coastal room does not need shells and stripes to feel coastal. Light and restraint do most of the work.

Kitchen and indoor-outdoor living

The open-plan kitchen is the heart of the home, and large doors open it straight to the outdoors so the sea air moves through. It is built for entertaining, family gatherings and slow mornings, and the surfboard propped in the living area is a nice touch of real life.

The scullery

Tucked behind the kitchen, the scullery is our favourite space in the house. A farmhouse sink, brass tapware, open shelving with glass jars and a few woven pieces: practical, streamlined and still beautiful. It is Three Birds' style in one room.

The dining room

A rustic timber table carries the Ecoya Grand Celebration Candle, white orchids, a sculptural ceramic bowl and a stone dish. One large candle in the centre, rather than a row of small ones, is what makes the table feel like an occasion. The main bedroom

The powder room

A vintage brass mirror, white tulips in a ceramic vase, rolled towels on open shelving and a matching Ecoya hand wash and lotion by the basin. It is a small room given real care, and it shows.

Monochrome moments

Against the soft coastal palette, black and white accents sharpen the architecture. In the foyer, an Ecoya reed diffuser sits on a stack of design books beside a sculptural table lamp and a black-and-white print. That contrast keeps the house from drifting into beige.

The laundry

Even the laundry is styled: clean lines, Ecoya cleaning products lined up on rustic shelves, folded neutral linens, a natural scrubbing brush and tulips in a white vase. Proof that a utility room can be a pleasure to walk into.

Five ideas to borrow for a New Zealand beach home

1. Style the working rooms first

The scullery, powder room and laundry get as much attention here as the living room. At home, those are the rooms you use most and style least. Swapping mismatched bottles for one matching set, like Ecoya's Hand and Body Wash and its partner lotion, is the fastest change you can make.
