A plant is the fastest way to make a room feel finished, and the pot is the reason it either works or looks like a garden centre. The plant is temporary. The planter is the decor.

Scale is where most people go wrong. The pot should be roughly a third of the total height, and a plant that looks right in the shop will look small in a corner. Group in odd numbers at varying heights, repeat one material across the room, and let at least one trail. If the light is bad or you travel, faux stems and potted plants do the same job without the guilt.
