Wall space is the storage most homes forget they have. Hooks and shelves take the pressure off floors and benchtops, and in a small house they are often the difference between a room that works and one that does not.

Hang hooks lower than feels right. Most people fix them at eye level, which is fine for a hat and useless for a coat with any weight in it.

How high should I hang a shelf above a desk or bench?
Allow about 30 to 45cm between the work surface and the underside of the shelf, so you have room for a lamp or screen without knocking your head. Above a sofa, around 25 to 30cm clear of the back cushions works well.

How much weight can a floating shelf hold?
It depends on the shelf and, more than anything, the fixing. Screw into studs where you can, or use wall anchors rated for your wall type, and check the product page for load guidance before loading it with books.

What is the Made of Tomorrow FOLD Display Ledge?
It is a slim aluminium shelf made in New Zealand, in 600mm and 1200mm lengths, with a 20mm lip. The white version is water-resistant and suits bathrooms, kitchens and outdoor spaces, and it is great for leaning prints.

Which hooks work without any drilling?
