Introducing | Lady Waves by Eleanor Ozich
Showcasing a collection of more than 50 stories, recipes and poems written by New Zealand women surfers, Lady Waves is a book with the stories of women and the waves in their hearts.
From Eleanor: "Three winters ago, a new friend invited me to come out for a surf on a borrowed longboard that hung outside the boot of her car.
That morning I picked up a wetsuit from the op shop for five dollars and tentatively followed her into the waves. As soon as I stood up, my feet gripping onto the sticky wax of the board, my childhood love of surfing came rushing back.
This was the beginning of a new era. A new way of living that would transform my life! Fast forward to now, and I'm dancing with the waves almost every single day. It's become a beautiful addiction that has changed the way I feel about everything!

One of the things I love most about surfing is how rad and supportive the women's surf community is. I don't think I've ever come across a lady in the water that hasn't grinned back or struck up a conversation!
The women I've met and the stories we've shared is what in fact, sparked the idea for this brand new book. I wanted to encapsulate the true enchantment of surfing and the extraordinary lifestyle that comes along with it!
Whether you've never surfed before or are a seasoned surf expert, I hope this collection of writing sparks the deep and complex joy that the art of surfing can bring.
Surfing is incredibly humbling. One moment you’re experiencing the ride of your life, and the next, you’re wholly being tossed around by a powerful wave. The ocean always reminding you of who is in charge. But even in the most exhilarating of moments, there’s this beautiful sense of time standing still. It’s a moment to escape your body and mind and feel immensely connected to nature. To work out your true place in the world.
“Surfing has done so much for me personally, for my mental health, and also through all the friendships I’ve formed through surfing,” says Eleanor. Photo / Babiche Martens via Viva Magazine
