NEW | Binchotan Charcoal Water Filters

Our Binchotan charcoal water filters from Black & Blum can be added to any water bottle, jug or container. This activated charcoal naturally filters any chlorine, adds minerals and lasts up to 6 months.

Why charcoal for filtering water?

Charcoal is an active carbon, meaning it attracts impurities like chlorine and holds them to its surface, away from the water you drink. Japan has been using charcoal to purify and soften water for centuries.

How do I use it to filter water?

Simply take the charcoal from it’s packaging and place it into any bottle, jug or vessel and fill with tap water. You will notice an improvement in taste after about an hour.

Does it ever stop working?

Binchotan charcoal has about a 6-month life, however if you should notice a decline in taste at 3 months, you can simply boil it in water for 10 minutes. This will reactivate the active ions within the charcoal and enable it to continue filtering impurities for another 3 months.

What to do if it breaks?

If your charcoal has broken, don’t worry, it will still work fine. However, if you’d prefer to buy another, you can still use the broken pieces in many different ways. To know more about this, have a look at the FAQ section at the bottom of this page.

FAQ

CAN I USE THE CHARCOAL WATER FILTER IN ALL BOTTLES?

Yes you can use the Binchotan charcoal water filter in all our water bottles, although some of them, like the glass bottles, would require the steel coil as well to ensure your charcoal doesn’t move too much in the bottle.

WHAT IS BINTOCHAN CHARCOAL MADE FROM?

Binchotan is an active carbon made from tree branches and is renowned for its ability to soften water, add good minerals and absorb unwanted tastes and odours, such as chlorine.

WHERE DOES THE CHARCOAL COME FROM?

Our charcoal is sustainably sourced from a renewable forest in Laos. It’s burned to up to 1000°C using an ancient method and then rapidly cooled in the earth, producing a very smooth, very dense material that naturally filters water.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE CHARCOAL BREAKS?

It will still work the same in your bottle, but if you’re not sure there’s plenty of other great uses for it. It can be used as a deodoriser in shoes, broken up and spread over house plants adding nutrients to the soil. It even can absorb humidity in the air if placed in your wardrobe.

HOW LONG DOES THE CHARCOAL LAST?

If used in just over 1.1L of water daily, it will last for 3 months. You can then recharge it by boiling it for 10 minutes, and it will last an additional 3 months.
